Sonko vows to keep Sonko Rescue Team operational amid deregistration threats

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged to sustain the operations of the Sonko Rescue Team (SRT) despite threats of deregistration from the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBORA).

Speaking in Nairobi, Sonko assured the public that SRT, which has been serving vulnerable communities for nearly 15 years, will comply with legal requirements to avoid disruption.

“Many people rely on us. We provide essential services such as free transport for mourners, food distribution, and other critical support. We are committed to continuing this work within the bounds of the law,” Sonko said.

PBORA recently announced plans to deregister over 2,800 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for non-compliance with the Public Benefit Organizations (PBO) Act, 2013. SRT, known for its services like ambulance support, firefighting, clean water supply, and food aid, is among the organizations at risk.

Sonko expressed optimism about resolving compliance issues through dialogue, reiterating his commitment to meeting regulatory requirements.

“We are law-abiding and ready to engage with PBORA to address their concerns. The Sonko Rescue Team will continue to operate,” he affirmed.

He also urged PBORA to adopt a consultative approach, emphasizing the impact on employees and beneficiaries of affected NGOs.

“Jobs and livelihoods are at stake. The regulator should provide more room and amnesty for organizations to achieve compliance,” Sonko added.

PBORA’s actions follow the recent enforcement of the PBO Act, 2013, granting it authority to oversee NGOs, including registration, compliance monitoring, and deregistration. According to a Gazette notice issued on November 21, organizations have 15 days to resolve compliance issues or face deregistration.

SRT has earned recognition for its community support, especially during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic when it distributed food to thousands of Kenyans. Its services have complemented local government efforts in providing essential aid.

Separately, the Environment and Land Court dismissed a case challenging the property’s lease to SRT by the Kenya Railways Corporation Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme.

“This property is central to our operations, and its legal status allows us to continue our mission to serve the public,” Sonko said, celebrating the legal victory.

As the compliance deadline looms, Sonko remains optimistic about finding a resolution with PBORA.

“Our mission is to serve Kenyans, and we will do so within the law,” he reiterated.
