Six injured in early morning crash on Sagana-Karatina road

The matatu was en route to Karatina from Nairobi, and its driver had left the vehicle to fetch fuel nearby.

Six people were injured early this morning when a lorry collided with a 14-seater matatu parked along the busy Sagana-Karatina road in Kibingoti, Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 5 a.m. when the lorry rammed into the stationary matatu, which had been parked after running out of fuel.

The matatu was en route to Karatina from Nairobi, and its driver had left the vehicle to fetch fuel nearby.

Justin Karanja, a local resident who lives near the highway, said the six injured passengers were inside the matatu when the lorry hit it from behind.

Other passengers, who had exited the vehicle while waiting for the driver to return with fuel, narrowly avoided injury.

“We rushed the injured to two private hospitals in Kibingoti immediately after the crash,” Karanja stated. He also alerted traffic police officers from the Sagana Police Station, who arrived promptly at the scene.

Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei confirmed the incident and urged drivers to adhere to traffic rules, especially during the festive season.

The truck and the matatu have since been towed to the Sagana Police Station as investigations into the crash continue.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of proper safety measures when dealing with roadside emergencies on busy highways.

Authorities are also reminding motorists to ensure their vehicles are adequately fuelled before starting long journeys.
