Several villages cut off after river burst its banks in Kirinyaga

Floods in Kirinyaga County on April 24, 2024.

Heavy rainfall in Kirinyaga Central and its vicinity has resulted in severe flooding, leaving several villages isolated from Kutus town and nearby areas.

The overflow of the Icakimango River, draining into River Thiba, has caused unprecedented breaches in its banks, prompting concerns among residents.

Harrison Ngiria, a local resident, expressed alarm over the situation, recounting a narrow escape from the collapsing perimeter wall.

The conditions have disrupted the daily lives of Kirinyaga University students, who were compelled to seek alternative routes to their hostels.

This isn't the first time Ngomongo village has faced such a predicament, as memories of previous flooding incidents loom large. Contributing factors include heavy rains in the Mt Kenya forest and inadequate drainage infrastructure in Kutus town.

The humanitarian impact is grave, with over 40 families displaced from Kanyekiine ward and neighbouring Kangai ward.

In response, the Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament has initiated support efforts for the affected families, urging others in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.

Meanwhile, Governor Anne Waiguru has issued a warning to residents near Thiba Dam in Gichugu, advising them to remain vigilant amidst rising water levels.

The situation extends beyond immediate displacement, with the Kirinyaga Red Cross reporting over 600 families displaced and tragic fatalities in Mwea West sub-county.
