The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has announced partial closure of the Thika Superhighway at the Kahawa Sukari drift.

The section between Kahawa Barracks and Kenyatta University, for Thika Bound traffic has been closed following flooding on Wednesday morning.

The Authority has cautioned road users against any attempts to use this section of the road.

“Motorists heading to Thika may use Kiambu Road and turn off to the Northern Bypass to Ruiru and vise versa. We will continue to monitor the water levels and advise when the water subsides,” KENHA said.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has also announced the immediate closure of the Athi River - Namanga Road due to massive flooding at Kimalat area following heavy downpour in the area.

In a statement, KENHA further said alternative routes in the area have also been submerged, and warned road users against attempting to use the road at this particular moment.

The flooding is as a result of Kimalat River breaking its banks when heavy rains pounded most parts of Nairobi and its surrounding counties on Tuesday night.

"We will continue to monitor the water levels and advise when the water subsides," KENHA said.

The heavy downpour also led to flooding within Kitengela area, where homes were marooned and residents trapped.

The Kenya Road Cross responded, rescuing six people from the floods and providing assistance to others trapped by the floods.

KENHA has also announced the partial closure of several roads within Nairobi and Kiambu county after they were flooded.

The said roads are Enterprise Road, Eastern bypass and Thika bypass. Near Kenyatta University, motorists using the busy Thika superhighway were forced to find alternative routes after the road was submerged in flood water.

Raila Odinga Road (formerly Mbagathi Way) was also flooded on Wednesday morning, with users cautioned to use alternative routes.
