Sakaja approves new CEO management structure for Level 4 hospitals in Nairobi

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja chairs Cabinet meeting in Nairobi.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has granted approval to extend the management structure of Level 5 hospitals to all Level 4 hospitals in Nairobi County.

This significant decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Sakaja in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Under the new structure, Level 4 hospitals in Nairobi will now be headed by a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a position that will supersede the current role of the medical superintendent.

This management model, already in place at all Level 5 hospitals within the county, is expected to bring enhanced governance and operational efficiency to these critical healthcare facilities.

The Cabinet also addressed the urgent need to establish boards for these institutions, a step crucial for aligning the hospitals with key legislative frameworks.

"The primary objective is to fill board vacancies in compliance with the Public Finance Management (PFM) Act of 2012 and the Facilities Improvement Financing (FIF) Act of 2023,” Governor Sakaja stated.

Among the key facilities to benefit from this governance overhaul are Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital and several other prominent Level 4 institutions across the county.

The establishment of these boards is expected to introduce robust governance structures, enhancing accountability and operational efficiency within these institutions, the Cabinet emphasized.

This initiative forms part of Nairobi County's broader commitment to improving healthcare services for its residents. The county aims to bolster the financial management and transparency of its health institutions, a move seen as critical to maintaining high standards of healthcare.

"By appointing qualified and dedicated board members, the county ensures that health institutions are better equipped to meet the needs of Nairobi's growing population, ultimately enhancing healthcare delivery across the region," Governor Sakaja added.
