Eighteen youths who were arrested during Saba Saba protests in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, will be released on a cash bail of Ksh.40,000 after the Wanguru Law Court reduced the bail from Ksh.50,000.
The 18 include Felix Karanja, Kelvin Muchira, Dennis Mawira,
Brighton Mwaniki, Paul Njehia, Innocent Wafula, Peter Mwangi, Simon Ng’are,
Onesmus Mwendia and Zachary Mwondia.
Others are Peter Mutie, Justus Karanja, Geoffrey Gichimo,
Dennis Karanja, Jackson Mutugi, Joseph Ng’ang’a, Kevin Karanja and Alvin Mutuma.
They were arrested in Ngurubani in Mwea-East sub‑county on
July 7 and are accused of having taken part in an unlawful assembly with the intent
to break into and steal from Nice Supermarket.
The group appeared before Wanguru Law Court on July 8, 2025,
where detectives were granted three days to investigate.
On July 11, they pleaded not guilty and were each remanded
on Ksh.50,000 cash bail.
Only eight people have since paid the Ksh 50,000, while ten remain in Mwea GK prison on remand.
The Law Society of Kenya, Kirinyaga chapter, sent
Obadiah Kuria Mburu to represent the youths and petitioned the court to
lower the bail to Ksh 40,000.
“Only eight people have paid the cash bail of Ksh 50,000 and
ten are still held at Mwea GK prison,” Mburu told the court.
The case will be mentioned again on August 6 2025, for the
prosecution to supply all documents it intends to rely on, including CCTV footage.
