Ruto: I have no issue with our friends in the opposition

President William Ruto says he has no problem with the opposition.

Speaking at Singalo during the launch of Bungoma County Aggregation and Industrial Park on Monday, the Head of State said it is the right of the opposition to oversight the government.

“I have no issue with our friends in the opposition, they are discharging a constitutional responsibility of oversight and we have even made things easy for them, I have given instructions that members of my cabinet go to parliament and answer questions,” Ruto said.

The president however warned that the opposition should carry out its work on condition that they maintain peace.

Ruto said that he is very willing to create the office of the leader of the opposition so that they may be equipped with resources to conduct their mandate of overseeing and criticizing the government.

“I have also said that even if they need a bigger office of the leader of the opposition, I am ready to create the office of the leader of the opposition that will be fully funded by the government so that they may be able to properly execute their mandate of oversight,” Ruto said.

He dismissed the use of violence as a means of criticizing the government, frowning upon the destruction of property witnessed during the recent protests called by opposition leader Raila Odinga.

He labelled such activities unconstitutional and unpatriotic.

“What we are against is violence. Let us refrain from mayhem and violence, what we cannot accept…because it is unconstitutional, it is undemocratic, it is unpatriotic, it is against the rule of law, is violence in our politics,” Ruto said.

“Organizing violence to destroy peoples’ property, organizing violence to destroy public property including burning roads and burning public infrastructure is undemocratic, is unpatriotic, it is against the rule of law, it is unconstitutional and it should not happen in the Kenya of 21st century.”
