Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna holds that political leaders close to President William Ruto are living in angst over the shrinking chances of getting a second term in office.

Speaking on Wednesday, Sifuna noted that the political contempt Ruto's government faces has eroded public confidence and tightened chances for another stint at the nation's helm.

"The biggest political change we have witnessed in the past year and a half is the realization by mwananchi that they are more powerful than the leaders," he said on Spice FM.

"These people are very afraid. If you look at the pronouncements of the President and the people around his circles are speaking from a position of fear because they have realized that there is very little time left to change the political tides."

The political firebrand lauded the youth uprising in June 2024 when Kenyans stormed Parliament during the anti-government protests, noting that it permanently shifted the political space in the nation.

He said that leaders were stripped of their political arrogance and were forced to jump off their high horses to heed demands from Kenyans.

"For a very long time we in the elected leadership have held ourselves out as being more knowledgeable, superior to the people but after June 25 Kenyans realized that they are very powerful," he noted.

"They are aware that they will not meet the threshold for him to get a second term so they are actually now talking about it openly seems to steal the election."

Sifuna was referencing Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi's statement that Ruto will remain in power desipite censures from those calling for his ouster.

Speaking during a rally in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Sudi ridiculed online critics while referring to them as “wakora,” (thieves) insisting that despite their “noise,” Ruto is not going anywhere.

Sudi laughed off some of the attacks directed at the President, including the now viral ‘Ruto must go’ slogan, saying such calls were futile.

His sentiments were echoed by Daadab MP Farah Maalim who used condescending words towards the youthful Gen Zs who criticize the government, asserting that Ruto will not be a one-term ruler.

"When you see everything progressing and then some fools say ‘Kasongo Ruto must go.’ To hell with those who say that! Is he sitting in your mother’s or father’s seat? He is sitting in our seat, and we will re-elect him; we will deliver 99% or even 100%. We are saying Ruto will stay until 2032," Maalim stated at a different rally.
