President William Ruto has launched the Petroleum Gas (LPG) Initiative, which seeks to transition public schools away from biomass-based energy and towards cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cooking options.

The launch, which took place at Jamhuri High School, aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy for households and institutions.

President Ruto emphasised the importance of combating environmental degradation, deforestation, and pollution caused by the continued use of traditional cooking fuels such as firewood.

“High biomass energy demand undermines afforestation efforts to a great extent. By reducing biomass use and accelerating tree planting efforts, we will enhance forest cover and secure a healthier environment for generations to come,” he said.

The LPG Initiative for Public Schools is consistent with the government's ambitious strategy to increase LPG consumption from 6.5 kg to 15 kg per capita by 2028 and increase its penetration to 70%.

The initiative will begin with a pilot programme involving 20 institutions, which will then be expanded to all boarding schools nationwide within the next year.

President Ruto emphasised the economic and health benefits of switching to LPG, stating that cleaner energy would improve learning environments for students while also creating jobs and stimulating the economy through increased investment in the LPG sector.

He emphasised the government's collaboration with the private sector to improve LPG imports, lower costs, and ensure affordability.

“By zero-rating taxes on LPG and improving storage infrastructure, we are enhancing access for all Kenyans, particularly low-income households,” the President explained.

He also stated that the government's national awareness campaign on LPG safety and benefits will educate consumers and stakeholders to ensure widespread adoption.

The President emphasised that switching to LPG in schools will help to achieve national priorities such as lowering the cost of living, improving food security, and promoting economic growth.

“Today’s launch marks the beginning of a transformational journey that will make the learning environment safer, cleaner, and better for our children while contributing significantly to environmental conservation.” He concluded.
