Retired councilors ask gov't to honour gratuity promise

A section of former councilors in Migori County wants the government to declare its position in issuance of their gratuity that was promised by President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime.

The former councilors led by former South Sakwa ward councilor Martin Ondong said the government is silent about the gratuity that ought to have been given to them.

Ondong said many retired councilors have died while waiting for the money and yet the government is not clear on the matter. He said it would be proper for the government to tell the former councilor if it’s still willing to pay the gratuity or not.

Ondong argued that it is unfair to keep the former councilors waiting with no proper communication from the government.

He said many former councilors are living in abject poverty and cannot even afford treatment for their families and themselves. The former councilors have indicated that they served the country like other leaders who are now getting the gratuity from the government.
