Reappointing the same people to the same ministries shows serious confusion - MP Mbui

National Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui speaking with Citizen TV on April 23, 2024.

President William Ruto's haste in returning some individuals from his former Cabinet has shown clear confusion in his government, Kathiani Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Mbui has opined.

Speaking on Monday, MP Mbui said that Ruto's nomination of 11 persons - the first batch of new Cabinet Secretaries - should have incorporated participation from the public amid heaping calls on the need to have astute leadership in government.

Mbui added that Ruto's move to return some individuals from his dismissed cabinet, one in which the public lacked faith with, proves that he might be unfit to hold office.

"The president has the option of reshuffling and could have also dismissed part of the Cabinet but he made the decision himself that he had dismissed everybody so basically when he returns people to the same dockets it shows there is serious confusion in that regard," he said on Citien TV's Daybreak show.

"That does not give confidence to Kenyans about his ability to run the affairs of the state."

The legislator further argued that Ruto should have opted to welcome applications from interested members of the public and compile a team of his preference after the exercise.

"The president had the opportunity to bring in professionals. The Gen Z have said do not appoint friends and supporters, invest in professionals," he said.

President Ruto nominated the first batch of CSs to replace those he fired following weeks of youth-led anti-government protests.

In a press address at State House on Friday, Ruto said the 11 nominations – including the Attorney General - followed consultations across the political divide in an attempt to bring back peace and sanity to the country.

The list, however, contained six fired CSs, who now make a comeback in different ministries, with only Prof. Kithure Kindiki (Interior), Aden Duale (Defence), Alice Wahome (Lands) and Soipan Tuya (Forestry) retaining their former designations.

Ruto nominated former Trade CS Rebecca Miano to the position of Attorney-General and former Energy CS Davis Chirchir for the Roads and Transport docket.

Here is a full list of the 11 CSs and their designations amid public uproar on Ruto's decision to reinstate his former CSs.
