Protesters arrested over Finance Bill demos released
The Law Society of Kenya is currently securing the release
of protesters arrested on Tuesday during the Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations
in Nairobi.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo made the announcement saying
that the Society’s national council was holding vigil at different police
stations near the Central Business District to oversee the release of the
people.
She revealed that already
those remanded at Kilimani Police Station had been released.
“After a long day of dedicated efforts from members of @LawSocietyofKeacross Nairobi, we are
happy to inform the public that the protestors are currently being released
from Kilimani, Kamukunji and Central Police Stations,” she wrote on X.
“The national council is holding vigil at Central Police
Station to ensure all those being held at the station are released. Some of our
members were at Kilimani Police Station earlier where they have secured the
release of the protestors that had been held there.”
The LSK president while underscoring the Socirty’s duty to
the public in ensuring the rule of Law is upheld further appealed to its
members around Kamukunji Police Station to assist public members at the
facility.
“The @lsk_nbicouncil are at Kamukunji Police
Station to ensure the release of protesters held there. We call on our members
within the vicinity to report to Kamukunji Police Station to assist the team
there,” she stated.
“We remain steadfast to ensuring the rule of law is not
circumvented and the rights of our people respected. We appreciate the support
and encouragement from the public, and laud all the brave Advocates who came
out today to stand for what is right.”
Nairobians
on Tuesday took to the streets to protest the proposed increase in taxes through
the Finance Bill 2024 in a movement dubbed ‘Occupy Parliament’.
The
demonstrations were meant to pressure MPs against passing the bill which the
House will consider on Tuesday.
Several protesters were arrested after hours of running
battles with the police who lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the people
after the police declared the protest illegal.
