President Ruto to launch three key Affordable Housing Projects at the Coast

The initiatives, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, will be established in Mokowe (Lamu), Tezo (Kilifi), and Voi (Taita Taveta).
These projects aim to alleviate the country’s housing deficit while creating thousands of job opportunities. Local residents have lauded the government’s dedication to affordable housing, recognizing its potential to enhance urban settlements, support local businesses, and generate employment.
Tezo Affordable Housing Project
The Tezo Affordable Housing Project in Kilifi County will be the largest of the three, comprising 1,000 housing units spread across a five-acre site.
Valued at approximately Ksh.2.5 billion, the project is anticipated to inject more than Ksh.1 billion into the local economy while offering stable employment for over 200 workers during construction.
This initiative is expected to spur demand for locally sourced building materials, including sand, cement, and ballast.
Additionally, small businesses such as food vendors and service providers near the site are likely to benefit. The project will also incorporate local Jua Kali artisans in collaboration with TVET colleges, the National Construction Authority (NCA), and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).
Voi Pool Housing Project
In Taita Taveta County, the Voi Pool Housing Project will consist of 458 residential units, encompassing social, affordable, and market-rate housing. The development will also include commercial spaces and recreational amenities.
With an investment of Ksh.1.1 billion, the project is expected to provide over 150 daily job opportunities, benefiting construction workers, masons, electricians, and suppliers.
Many young people reliant on construction work for their livelihoods have expressed optimism about the employment prospects this initiative will bring.
Mokowe Affordable Housing Project
In Lamu County, the Mokowe Affordable Housing Project will feature 393 residential units and 75 commercial shops, playing a vital role in stimulating economic growth in the area.
This Ksh.1.2 billion investment will prioritize local labor and suppliers, ensuring direct employment for around 120 workers daily, including electricians, plumbers, and masons.
The government plans to work closely with Jua Kali artisans and vocational training centers to create long-term employment opportunities.
The initiative is projected to inject over Ksh.400 million into the local economy and will integrate micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through partnerships with vocational institutions like Mokowe Vocational Training Center for technical support and skills development. Additionally, the government has committed to sourcing raw materials locally within Lamu County.
Government’s Commitment to Housing Development
During his tour of the coastal region, President Ruto is expected to reaffirm the government’s commitment to affordable housing, emphasizing its role in job creation, urban transformation, and economic empowerment.
According to the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, these housing projects align with government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which positions housing development as a key driver of employment and urban modernization.
