President Ruto to commission the Bumala Modern Market in Busia
Strategically located along the bustling Kisumu-Busia highway, the Bumala Market is part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s ambitious plan to construct over 400 modern markets nationwide.
The market, once completed, will feature an array of facilities, including an ablution block, an ICT hub, a cold room, a food court, and spaces for young mothers, among other social amenities. It is expected to host over 500 traders, attracting vendors from neighbouring counties such as Vihiga and Bungoma, further boosting inter-county trade.
Local traders, like food vendor Electina Akello, have already begun reaping benefits from the ongoing construction activities. Akello, who operates near the construction site, serves meals to over 100 workers daily. She has employed six workers in her eatery and is optimistic about securing space in the new market to expand her business.
“I started providing food to the workers at the site to ensure they have a convenient dining option during breaks,” says Akello. “This project not only supports my business but also empowers our community. Such initiatives spur growth, and I urge politicians to rally behind the government’s development agenda.”
The construction of the Bumala Modern Market has created job opportunities for local youth, with over 100 currently employed on-site. This number is expected to rise to 200 as the project progresses.
Margaret Atieno, a trader in the open-air market, expressed her enthusiasm for the project. “The new market will dignify our trade and provide a better environment for us to work,” she said. Atieno also called on the government to prioritize local traders during the allocation of working spaces once the market is completed.
