Preparations for Madaraka Day celebrations almost complete - PS Omollo
The government has announced that
preparations for the upcoming Madaraka Day Celebrations which will be held at
the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County are almost complete.
Internal
Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo,
who toured the venue on Thursday for inspection, said everything was in place
for the national celebrations slated for June 1, 2024.
PS
Omollo said all the venues to be used for the national holiday including Matulo
airstrip, Kibabii University and the County Commissioner’s residence had been
assessed and works were near completion.
According
to the PS, the stadium will host the main celebrations; Kibabii University will
host an exhibition themed ‘Food and Security’ prior to the event, while the
County Commissioner’s residence will host the State Luncheon after the
celebrations.
“Today
we have had an assessment of virtually all the locations where the activities
will be happening as part of the celebrations. We started at Matulo airstrip
where work is over 90 per cent complete and ready by the 15th of this month,
then we proceeded to Kibabii University where we will have exhibitions as part of
the run-up towards the celebrations,” said the PS.
“Our
last point of call was the County Commissioner’s residence which will be the
garden where the President will host the luncheon. That is ready, the
contractor will hand over the site on Monday and we are confident that all
other preparations for the celebrations will be completed in time.”
PS
Omollo said the National Youth Service (NYS) personnel had been tasked to help
in the completion of the stadium's terraces and infrastructure, including road
repairs and utility services, which he expressed confidence that were all on
schedule.
He
also underscored that the government had directed the Kenya Urban Roads
Authority (KURA) and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) to ensure feeder
roads within and outside the county were in good condition.
The PS addedd that the Kenya
Power and Lighting Company and the State Department for Water are also on-site
to ensure necessary electricity and water connections.
