Preparations for the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations set to be held in Homa Bay County are progressing steadily, according to the government.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Internal Security and
National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo confirmed that
the national event, scheduled for June 1, will be held under the theme ‘Blue
Economy and Maritime Affairs.’
“This year’s celebrations, which will be held in Homa Bay
County, are themed ‘Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs’ in line with our
country’s strategic focus on unlocking the potential of our aquatic resources
for sustainable development and economic transformation,” said Dr. Omollo.
The government says it is undertaking infrastructure
upgrades in the host county as part of its rotational hosting model for
national events.
“This approach ensures that each host county enjoys
long-term socio-economic gains beyond the celebrations,” the statement read.
The main venue, Raila Odinga Stadium, is undergoing upgrades
including construction of public terraces and rehabilitation of the pavilion,
which are over 70 percent complete. Designated parking areas and perimeter wall
extensions are also ongoing at 60 and 80 percent completion, respectively.
Road projects totaling over 35 kilometers are underway to
improve access across the county. These include upgrades by KeNHA, KeRRA and
KURA to roads leading to the stadium and other strategic points such as the
County Government Headquarters in Arujo.
The County Commissioner’s Residence, which will host the
official State Garden Party, is also being renovated.
“Works on the main house, staff quarters, ablution
facilities, gazebo, as well as external infrastructure... are more than 75
percent complete,” said Dr. Omollo.
The PS also noted that refurbishment of the Kabunde Airstrip
is ongoing, with the repair of runway fencing completed while the runway
extension is at 70 percent.
He added that the construction of a new apron and taxiways
is in progress alongside the refurbishment of the passenger terminal.
“Our primary target is to deliver a successful and memorable
Madaraka Day celebration that not only honors our freedom fighters but also
reflects the unity and progress of our nation,” Dr. Omollo stated.
