A multi-agency team led by officers from the Obama Police Station in Kayole carried out a night raid on Thursday targeting illicit alcohol brewing dens in the Mwengenye area, near the Dandora Bridge along the Nairobi River.

During the operation, the officers confiscated and destroyed over 100 litres of kangara — a locally brewed illicit alcohol — along with several 20-litre jerricans used in its production. Police have since launched investigations to apprehend the suspected brewers behind the illegal trade.

The Kayole raid is part of a broader nationwide crackdown on illicit substances, with police in Kilifi County also conducting a series of operations earlier in the week. On Tuesday, two individuals were arrested in connection with drug trafficking, with one suspect also facing a robbery with violence charge.

Acting on a tip-off from the public, officers apprehended one suspect in the Kibaoni area on Tuesday. A separate operation on Wednesday saw officers pursue a gang of three, managing to arrest one, while efforts to locate the other two are ongoing.

The National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, reiterating their commitment to combating the distribution of illicit alcohol and drugs. The NPS also appealed for continued support from the public and relevant stakeholders in the ongoing fight against these social vices.
