Earlier reports claimed that Buke was allegedly abducted in Meru by unknown men and bundled into a waiting vehicle.
According to a statement by police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, Buke was arrested during an ongoing campaign titled 'Operation Ondoa Jangili' that is being conducted in both Marsabit and Isiolo Counties.
Buke is suspected of facilitating and coordinating the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in Isiolo and Marsabit.
"We wish to clarify that Sadam Buke is in lawful custody alongside others. He is suspected of being a key facilitator and coordinator of Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in both Isiolo and Marsabit Counties," reads the statement.
Kenyan police launched a crackdown against the group, believing that some of its members have hideouts in Kenya.
"We reiterate our commitment to comply with constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms," the statement read in part.
The police service has been accused of violating human rights by abducting individuals against their will. Human rights groups have recorded over 82 youths having been abducted since the rise of the Gen-Z protests in June 2024.
In response, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has denied any police involvement in the abductions and added that such allegations are aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the police service.
