The National Police Service (NPS) has reassured members of the public of their safety following a terror alert from the U.S. Embassy.

In a statement on Saturday, NPS asserted that it will remain on high alert and officers have already been deployed across the country.

"The National Police Service is committed to the multi-agency security strategy and is working closely with other security agencies at national, regional and international levels as well as members of public, through intelligence-led policing," said NPS.

Members of the public have been urged to report any suspicious activity or persons to the nearest police station or use the toll-free numbers 112, 991 and 999 or FichuakwaDCI hotline 0800722203.

The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi alerted U.S citizens in Kenya to exercise "increased caution due to the risks of terrorism and kidnapping".

In a statement, the Embassy said that locations frequented by U.S. citizens and other foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and across the nation continue to be targeted by terrorists.

"Terrorist groups could attack with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners and tourists," read the statement in part.
