Patient suspected of stealing phone from nurse in Machakos Hospital arrested

Patient holds phone he is accused of stealing from Machakos Hospital.

Police in Machakos County are holding a man after he was nabbed with a stolen mobile phone belonging to one of the nurses attached to the Machakos Level Five hospital.

This follows the recent arrests of two other men suspected to be part of a phone theft syndicate agonizing patients at the same facility.

The fourty days dawned on the 17-year-old after he was bombarded by security officers at the facility in possession with a stolen phone belonging to the said nurse Philip Mumo.

The minor allegedly stole the phone shortly after being attended to by Mumo at the Diabetes Centre.

Mumo had left his phone at his desk after releasing the patient. As he engaged with a fellow nurse, it didn't take him five minutes to realise his phone was missing. That's when he raised the alarm.

The security team acted swiftly after receiving a report from the nurse and upon reviewing the CCTV footage, they discovered that the patient who had just been attended to by the nurse, was the one who had stolen the phone.

He was arrested before leaving the hospital vicinity and is now in police custody as investigations into the matter commence.

Machakos County Chief Officer of Public Health, Simon Simba Mwako warned those with such malicious intent, indicating that they will face serious consequences.

Mwako revealed that the hospital has enhanced its security measures by requiring all staff to wear identification tags. The initiative aims to better manage and identify unsuspecting individuals, thereby preventing thefts targeting both medical staff and patients in the wards.
