Passenger bus plunges into Indian Ocean in Likoni, 9 injured

By Ibrahim Mudibo,

A passenger bus plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni Ferry crossing channel on Sunday morning.

According to the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), the brakes of the bus failed as it climbed up hill from the ferry on the Likoni side. The bus heading to Ukunda then went downhill, plunging into the Indian Ocean.

The Kenya Red Cross reports that nine people were injured: seven of whom were treated at the scene, while three were taken to hospital.

The accident brought business at the busy channel to a standstill, causing multiple delays. Vehicles and pedestrians were unable to board ferries as transport activities on the crossing channel were disrupted.

At press time, the bus had been retrieved from the ocean, with a slow return of normalcy being witnessed at the crossing channel.
