Parliament police officer under probe for demanding Ksh.40K for ‘smooth closure’ of case

A police officer attached to Parliament Police Station in Nairobi is facing corruption charges for attempting to extort Ksh.40,000 from a suspect with an outstanding matter at the station.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the suspect was arrested by the police and his file was forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to approve prosecution.

However, the DPP directed that the complainant be released and the matter settled out of court.

Corporal John Mwai Mbili is accused of telling the complainant that he must pay him “something small” to "facilitate a smooth closure" of the matter, per a report issued on Wednesday by the anti-graft agency.

“He demanded a bribe of Ksh.40,000 from the complainant threatening that if the complainant failed to pay, he would charge him in court with new offences,” said EACC.

The complainant reported the matter to the integrity watchdog, which conducted an inquiry and later arrested Corporal Mbili.

He was processed and later booked at Kilimani Police Station and has since been released on bail pending the conclusion of the investigation.
