According to a police report on the incident, one of the residents in Ifo 2 refugee camp, his wife suddenly lost consciousness following a stampede at the food distribution centre.
Officers at the scene rushed her to Ifo 2 Red Cross Hospital, where she was placed on a life support machine but passed away.
The victim's body is currently at the hospital awaiting a postmortem examination.
Eyewitnesses at the scene indicated that the refugees queued for hours in extreme heat, leading to an agitated crowd.
Further, the officers were unable to control the crowd, causing a melee that resulted in a stampede as the refugees struggled to exit the congested area.
Following the incident, Dadaab refugee camp released a statement, calling for human rights groups to take adequate measures to prevent a recurrence.
"We urge the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Food Programme (WFP), Department of Refugee Services (DRS) and implementing partners to immediately assess the situation at all distribution points and take necessary measures to prevent a recurrence," the statement read in part.
"This includes decentralizing food distribution centres, ensuring better crowd management, and improving emergency response protocols."
