Veteran rapper Juliani, real name Julius
Owino, has proposed a rather interesting idea as Kenyans gear for the next
round of the ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests.
Juliani, himself not a stranger to protests -
or protest songs - was actively involved in the first edition of the Tuesday
riots, staying at Industrial Area police station until past 9pm in an attempt
to secure the freedom of activist Boniface Mwangi and two others.
Now, as Kenyans ready themselves for yet
another trip to town on Thursday, Juliani seems to believe that there's only
one thing missing in the packed resistance menu - music.
The 'Utawala' rapper has now suggested adding
protest music into the Thursday activities, calling upon potential protesters
to bring along a Bluetooth speaker for the mission.
"Attention Attention: How about a full
party kesho. Watu wabebe Bluetooth speaker!" he wrote on X on Wednesday.
"We agree on a playlist. (ngoma yoyote
inaeza get wase charged) Kaende kaende!"
Juliani's suggestion immediately got the
backing of thousands of Kenyans on X, with many lauding him for the idea and
promising to do exactly as suggested.
Social commentator Gabriel Oguda did not hide
his excitement, commenting, "I support this with all my body organs!"
Someone else said, "Kaende kaende! I
support this wholeheartedly! We will, in fact, be blasting your music Bro! First
on the playlist? Utawala!"
One excited Kenyan even quickly came up with
a brief list of songs they'd love to have played out loud in the streets.
"1. Daima me ni Kenya 2. Get up, stand
up 3. Utawala. 4. Redemption song. 5. Hii ni system ya majambazi. 6. Wajinga
sisi. 7. Freedom is coming. 8. If I ruled the world. Etc etc...Nipewe hiyo bluetooth
access (laugh emoji)!" he wrote.
Juliani's idea couldn't have come from a
better person - the legendary Dandora emcee has been actively involved in
protests in the past and boasts several chart-topping resistance songs too.
In the songs 'Utawala', 'Bahasha ya Ocampo'
and 'Exponential Potential', Juliani famously sang about the ills bedeveling
the Kenyan society, calling out endemic corruption, poor governance, greed and
mismanagement of national affairs.
As the Tuesday protests wrapped up, the
rapper took to his X account to thank the participants, quoting his own lyrics
while expressing his pride in the new crop of Kenyan protesters.
"I know tuko mood ya ‘Sitasimama maovu
yakitawala..’ lakini, what I've witnessed today, you young people I raise you ‘walitudharau....’
I am honoured to witness your greatness!" he wrote.
Undeterred by the sporadic arrests and police violence, Kenyans are gearing up for yet another round of the ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests set to go down on Thursday, June 20.
