New report reveals police officers killed 130 people last year
Civil society
groups under the umbrella ‘Missing Voices’ say there has been a significant
drop in extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances in the country.
A report released
on Friday revealed that 152 cases of police killings and enforced disappearances
were documented last year; 130 cases were police killings, and 22 enforced
disappearances.
Nairobi County led
with 53 cases of police killings and enforced disappearances reported in the
region.
Lamu recorded 15
cases, Kiambu and Nakuru counties came third and fourth with 13 and 12 cases
respectively.
The organisations
want laws on enforced disappearances to be enacted or amended to criminalize
the act as they called on the investigating body to expedite cases of police
killings to give justice to the victims’ families.
