New Kiambu Governor James Nyoro set to be sworn in

James Nyoro is to be sworn in as the new Governor for Kiambu County.

A statement from the Judiciary said the ceremony will take place on Thursday morning.

“High Court Judge John Onyiego will today Thursday, January 30, 2020, preside over the swearing in ceremony of the new Kiambu Governor,” the statement reads.

Nyoro who was the Kiambu Deputy Governor takes over from embattled Ferdinard Waititu whose impeachment was upheld by the Senate on Wednesday.

Just hours after the vote, the impeachment was officially Gazetted by the Government Printer.

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, who voted against upholding the impeachment, posted the message below on his Twitter page:

His Nandi counterpart Samson Cherargei also castigated the vote saying: “Devolution is under heavy attack from all angles under the altar of political persecution and expediency. Governor Waititu & Kiambu people did NOT get justice they deserved !. During the impeachment proceedings at Senate.”

Nyoro and Waititu have been at loggerheads ever since the latter was charged in court for abuse of office among other charges.

In July last year, Nyoro announced that he would be taking over operations at the county after the court barred Waititu from accessing his office over the graft charges.

He even reshuffled County Executive Committee members (CECs), a move that saw him get sued by Bernard Chege Mburu, a Kiambu resident.

A month later, Nyoro was barred from from interfering with operations of county government officers.

Marion Njoroge, another Kiambu resident, filed a petition claiming that Nyoro acted in violation of his powers.

In November, Waititu filed a petition to be allowed access back to his office and sought to have Nyoro or any other person barred from discharging functions of the office of the Governor.

His attempts were however thwarted after the county assembly voted to impeach him.
