Ndia MP George Kariuki raises concerns on poor state of roads

National Assembly's transport and infrastructure committee chairperson George Kariuki

The National Assembly's Transport and Infrastructure Committee has raised concerns over the rising number of damaged roads in the nation affected by the ongoing floods.

Led by the committee's chair George Kariuki, who is also MP for Ndia Constituency, the committee has urged leaders and residents to address the matter noting it will soon paralyse transport in the nation.

"Most of our roads have been damaged also bridges and culverts. We are not seeing leaders addressing this in their areas," he said.

He further expressed confidence that the national government will take appropriate action once the rains subside.

The torrential rains have damaged bridges and drainage tunnels which have even caused flooding in some areas.

On April 30, a section of the Embu-Meru highway was closed after cracks were spotted.

The soil in one part of the busy bridge started caving in, leaving a crack that prompted the closure of the road and traffic redirected.

Many lives have also been lost due to the ongoing floods, scaling up to 228 as of Sunday and 42,526 households have been displaced.
