Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the launch of seven additional kitchens next week, marking a significant expansion of the county's school feeding program. This initiative, aimed at providing nutritious meals to students across the city, will bring the total number of operational kitchens to 17.

The new kitchens are expected to serve over 310,000 students when schools reopen next week, significantly bolstering the county’s efforts to ensure no child in Nairobi goes to school hungry.

This expansion reflects Governor Sakaja's commitment to improving the welfare of Nairobi’s students and addressing food insecurity among the city's young population.

Speaking during a church service at AIC Pipeline in Nairobi, Governor Sakaja emphasized the importance of collaborative governance.

He highlighted how working with leaders from different political parties has been crucial in fostering inclusivity and ensuring that the needs of all Nairobians are met.

“Our success in Nairobi has been driven by a united government that includes leaders from the opposition, who hold the majority of MCAs,” he said, lauding President William Ruto’s efforts to involve more leaders across the political spectrum in the national government.

Governor Sakaja assured Nairobi residents of his unwavering commitment to fulfilling his promises as their governor. "We are dedicated to delivering on our pledges, and initiatives like the school feeding program are just the beginning," he stated.

As the county prepares to roll out these new kitchens, parents and educators alike are hopeful that this initiative will have a positive impact on student performance and overall well-being.

With more students receiving regular meals, the county government is optimistic that this will contribute to better attendance rates and enhanced academic outcomes.

The Dishi na County Programme was inaugurated in June 2023 with the groundbreaking of 10 central kitchens, followed by the serving of the first meal on August 28, 2023.

The second phase commenced in January 2024, with the operationalization of 10 central kitchens, ensuring that 184,000 children from 106 public schools received hot nutritious meals.
