The operation, which was part of a coordinated multi-agency effort, led to the interception of a lorry transporting 35 containers, each holding 250 litres of a clear liquid. The substance was carefully concealed under cartons of milk.
Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, CEO of NACADA, addressed the media at the scene, describing the operation as critical in protecting public health and safety.
“This was not just an attempt to break the law; it was a deliberate effort to endanger lives,” Dr. Omerikwa stated. “We will continue to pursue those involved in the illegal manufacture, trafficking, and sale of uncustomised substances. Under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering framework, we will trace and seize their assets.”
Samples of the seized ethanol have been sent to the Government Chemist for further analysis. Early investigations suggest that the substance was being trafficked for use in the production of illicit alcohol, a growing concern in the region.
Dr. Omerikwa praised the swift action and collaboration between local police and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), highlighting the success of the operation as a result of inter-agency coordination. “This operation is a testament to what can be achieved when agencies work together,” he said. “I commend the police and KRA for their vigilance and commitment to protecting the public.”
The NACADA CEO also emphasized the importance of enhanced intelligence sharing between government agencies, noting that closing communication gaps would be essential to breaking the networks behind the illicit trade. “The networks behind this illegal trade thrive on these gaps. We must close them to increase our success rate in future seizures and arrests,” he added.
Dr. Omerikwa further urged the public to play a key role in tackling the issue by reporting any suspicious activity through NACADA’s toll-free hotline, 1192. “Community involvement is crucial. We need to work together to protect our youth and secure the future of our nation,” he urged.
Investigations into the origins and intended destination of the seized ethanol are ongoing, as NACADA and its partners intensify their efforts to dismantle the networks driving Kenya’s illicit drug trade.
