Multimedia University student in viral video claims police intended to kill him
Trevor Mathenge, a Multimedia University
student nursing injuries from police brutality, says he survived death by a
whisker in what he claims was a deliberate attempt to murder him.
Eight students have narrated their ordeal at
the hands of law enforcers during the student strike earlier this week to the
Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), as investigations continue.
The officers were captured in a viral video
as they beat up Trevor on the floor. Chants of death echoed from four
uniformed police officers as they assaulted the student.
Trevor could be heard crying for help, saying:
"Afande, mimi sina makosa..."
The rogue officers ordered Trevor to stand up
and go die elsewhere. They said, "Amka, enda kufa hukooo!"
A desperate Trevor begged for his life to be
spared by the officers and he could be heard pleading, "Afande, mimi
sijafanya kosa lolote..." The officers however continued with threats of, "Unanijua?
Unanijua?"
One of the rogue officers, wearing a Kenya
Police combat uniform, grabbed Trevor's private parts, momentarily dragging him
on the floor.
"Nenda kufa huko!" He said. Trevor
pleaded saying, "Mimi ni mtoto kama wako."
With Trevor unable to stand due to repeated
blows from the officers, another officer intervened.
The video showed an officer pulling out a
teargas canister as his colleague pleads with him to stop, saying "Wachana
na yeye,” to which he responds; “Ni sawa, namwacha lakini nawacha yeye na
dawa."
The "dawa," which translates to
"medicine," referred to the teargas canister.
In a dramatic fight for survival, Trevor
miraculously dodged the teargas canister moments before it exploded.
Seeing Trevor's intention to escape, the
officer attempted to push him toward the explosive device - a move that could
have caused devastating injuries, as a voice was heard condemning Trevor:
"Kufa huko... kula vumbi..."
"When I told them my leg was broken,
they kept kicking me. Then one of them said, ‘Let's kill him, juu hawezi amka.’
Then an officer in green said, ‘Hatuwezi muacha hivyo...’ When I dodged the canister,
another officer said, ‘Mbona unahepa? Tutakupiga,’” he narrated.
Aside from the officers captured on camera
attempting to take Trevor’s life, eyewitnesses say one officer, recorded firing
a teargas canister at onlookers, was responsible for starting the fire in one
of the hostels.
As Trevor continues to recuperate at the
Rongai Orthopaedic Medical Center, eight other victims of police brutality have
recorded statements with IPOA.
