MPs welcome proposal for Raila to work with Ruto after AUC loss

Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu and yeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge speaking on Citizen TV on February 18, 2025.
Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu opined on Tuesday that the ruling government should take advantage of Odinga's return and use him as a national asset who will provide leadership counsel.
He added that the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which recognized the office of the leader of the opposition, should be adopted to afford Odinga political capital to have an official position
"Raila needs to be in the government, in the Executive. Now that he is back we could be able to approve the NADCO report and allow Kenyans to benefit from the many years of experience," he said speaking on Citizen TV.
"If he chooses to work with Ruto, he has to claim more space for himself so I see more people joining the broad-based government from Raila's side. And a number of them will have to leave and create room for others."
MP Mulu added that Odinga's second option would be retiring and seizing his political ambitions, a decision he says will bear greater ramifications due to his disaffection from Kenyan youth who blame him for abandoning them during the national political upheaval.
"He could come and say guys I've been in this game for many years, I want to hand my boots and become and advisor to the upcoming young leaders," the legislator noted.
"He will not have a chance to redeem himself from the Gen Z's. They look at him as someone who betrayed them and the cause."
His counterpart Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge added that the State should utilize Odinga's expertise and Ruto's government should not wait for the 2027 General Election to uptake the opposition leader's political position.
"Kenyans, for the first time across the divide, agreed that Raila is good value for this country. The best benefit that we can accrue from Raila is by seeing how he can better contribute to the welfare of the country rather than keeping him in abeyance and wait for 2027," MP Mathenge noted.
This comes after Belgut MP Nelson Koech opined that Odinga could be awarded a plump position in power, presumably his former position of Prime Minister.
"We could even do better by having the office of the Prime Minister. I'm just having a wild thought on what could happen," he opined.
MP Mathenge dismissed the proposal noting that it is "not a reality today because we have to change the constitution".
