Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has laughed off criticism and backlash directed at him over remarks he made in an interview on the sidelines of the inaugural Africa Climate Summit (ACS).

In an interview on Monday, Salasya was tasked with explaining the effects of Climate Change and the purpose of the ACS.

"People in Mumias are using firewood to cook, as area MP we are trying to find alternative means like subsidised cooking gas so that they don't cut down trees," Salasya said in part.

The legislator appeared to be short of words to explain what the summit was all about and what it aimed to achieve. He became a subject of discussion online, with the majority labelling him clueless on matters Climate Change and advocacy.

But in a rejoinder, Salasya laughed off those bashing him, saying he went to KICC to enjoy himself and that Climate Change and climate issues at large are not his area of concern, nor specialisation.

"I have seen people mock me that I didn't know anything about the summit. It is true, I went to KICC to enjoy myself. Climate is not my area of concern. Right now I am here in Kisumu to look at sugar issues, that is what concerns me, not climate," Salasya said in a video shared on his social media platforms.

He further said that his comments about Mombasa being cold due to global warming are true, but people were keen on finding fault in his sentiments, to make him a subject of discussion.

Salasya had said that recently he went to Mombasa and it was unusually cold. When he inquired, he was told it was due to Climate Change.

These are the same sentiments he shared when asked about the ongoing climate summit in Nairobi.
