MP Mukunji to table motion requiring referendum to impeach President, DP, Governors
Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji
now says he will table a motion to amend the impeachment law by making it mandatory
to carry out a referendum before ousting a President, Deputy President,
Governors and their deputies.
Speaking at NICA Church in Manyatta during
the ordination of five lay leaders, MP Mukunji noted that the electorate must
be given a chance to impeach holders of the Presidency and county offices.
The lawmaker cited the tribulations
facing Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, saying it is unfair for a leader elected
by millions of voters to be impeached by a few “selfish leaders.”
He argued that the Constitution is being
misused by lawmakers who want to settle personal scores with elected leaders to
oust them from office.
“I will table a motion to change the law on
impeachment so that when someone is being impeached, the voters speak in the
form of a referendum,” he said.
“We must change the impeachment process of
even Governors. You have all seen the troubles bedevilling Mwangaza in Meru;
her only mistake ni kukosana na wadosi kidogo.”
According to the Constitution, Governors and
their deputies can be impeached if a majority of MCAs, vote in support of an
impeachment motion tabled before them, which then makes its way to the Senate.
