Social media
activist and businessman Morara Kebaso has declared his readiness to refund all
the monies donated to him by Kenyans at the height of his popularity.
Kebaso, who has
kept a significantly low profile over the last several months, on Friday took
to his X account to ask anyone who ever contributed to his campaign machinery
to share their M-Pesa records as he was
ready to refund the donations and prove his detractors wrong.
"If you need
a refund for any contribution you made to me when i was raising funds kindly
reply below with the Mpesa message or check your Mpesa statement and recover
the Mpesa ref. code. I would like to refund any Kenyan that may have thought
that the contributions were a motivation for me seek leadership," he
wrote.
Morara's
announcement was quickly met with derision and ridicule from a section of X
users who accused him of mismanaging his popularity and mishandling the immense
trust Kenyans had bestowed on him.
X user Muthoni
Njakwe told him, "You had a great chance to rise in the leadership realm,
but you blew it," to which he
replied, "You dragged me down everyday."
User George T.
Diano also slammed Morara, saying, "You really are not ripe for
leadership,, just log out & take a break man."
Morara replied:
"You have trolled and insulted me everyday. I have gotten to a point where
am ready to refund. Please save my time and paste those Mpesa messages and reference codes."
Someone else said,
"That's what MPs have been doing Morara and it's conmanship! Diverting
public funds to their operations and returning the money once their systems
stabilize leaving the public with little time for utilization of development
funds. Confirmed what you would have become!"
Soon as the Gen Z
demonstrations rocked the country, circa June 2024, Morara Kebaso emerged as
one of the brightest stars of the online revolution and one of the most
formidable youthful voices railing against the President William Ruto administration.
He, however, soon
lost popularity with the general online audience after many accused him of
turning his back against the Gen Z and colluding with the political powers.
Others started
accusing him of running a dishonest scheme by continously raising funds to
merely boost his businesses and
not to, among other things, traverse the country and highlight stalled projects
that President Ruto had launched with much fanfare and pomp.
It is against that
backdrop that Morara decided to clear the air and initiate a refund program,
perhaps aiming to repair his damaged image and prove his integrity.
Already, some
Kenyans have confirmed that Morara sent
back the cash he received during his civic
education era, with some also sharing
messages acknowledging the receipt of their year-old funds.
Popular X
personality @@4Real_KE wrote: "After many days of struggle, I can confirm
that @MoraraKebasoSnr has paid back my 500. Big thanks to @Tuko_co_ke and all
who supported me in this fight. There's hope dear Kenyans if we fight hard enough
for what's rightfully ours."
As Kenyans
continue inundating him with their M-Pesa codes, hoping for a refund, Morara took to
his X page to, yet again, explain his decision while also explaining that he
was doing so to escape from the prison of being deemed a conman and an online
swindler.
"Even God
knows I have done my best. But I cannot continue living a life where am
traumatized everyday to feel like a thief. My reputation is more important than
money. And I will guard it with my life," he wrote.
"If you feel
robbed or conned because you contributed towards Civic Education activities
kindly continue commenting with Mpesa Messages below or if you have lost the
message just download your statement and get the Mpesa Reference Code."
Morara also added
that the exercise would go on for the next several days as he amplified the
need to defend his own honor and rewrite the narrative.
"We will be
doing this process of refunds everyday for the next 3 days until everyone who
feels robbed or conned receives what is rightfully theirs," he said.
