MoH to introduce ‘robust mental wellness programs’ after Gatundu intern doctor death
The Ministry of Health will introduce “robust
workplace mental wellness programs” for healthcare workers nationwide, Cabinet
Secretary Deborah Barasa said on Wednesday, after a medical intern at the
Gatundu Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County died by suicide on Sunday.
Desree Moraa Obwogi’s body was discovered in a house she shared with a
friend just metres away from the health facility, with a suicide note seen by
Citizen TV pointing to difficulties in her
working environment.
Dr Obwogi's death is “a stark reminder of the silent
struggles that many, including those in the healthcare profession, often endure,”
CS Barasa said, adding that the wellness programs will “ensure that support
systems are strengthened and that those facing challenges don't feel alone.”
“On behalf of the Ministry of Health, I
extend our deepest condolences to Dr Moraa's family, friends, and colleagues
during this incredibly difficult time. This tragedy calls upon us to renew our
commitment to addressing the growing mental health burden in our country,” said
the health minister.
Obwogi had worked at Gatundu Level 5
Hospital for four just weeks after transferring from Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.
She was last seen at the facility on Sunday
after a 36-hour shift.
Her death sparked calls for a better
working environment for medical interns by the Kenya Medical Practitioners,
Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
“The healthcare system has recently
experienced significant disruptions after doctors went on strike demanding for
better working conditions. These include providing comprehensive medical cover
for medics, clearing unpaid salaries and improving interns' pay,” KMPDU
Secretary-General Davji Atellah said on Tuesday.
The union’s officials in Kiambu County have
additionally complained of frustrations, long working hours and unfriendly
working conditions for intern doctors.
