The crash, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. and involved three vehicles, injured more than 50 people, including several Moi University students who were on a school bus.
Police confirmed the accident, which involved a Toyota Voxy (Reg. No. KDE 595F) driven by the late Bishop Deya, a Moi University school bus (Reg. No. KCK 581U), and a Toyota Fortuner (Reg. No. 41CG 248A).
According to the police report, the Toyota Voxy, which was driving from Kisumu to Bondo, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the university bus coming the other way. The Voxy then collided with the Toyota Fortuner, which was trailing the bus.
Bishop Deya, 65, suffered a severe head injury and died on the scene.
Two passengers in his vehicle — Christine Akinyi Odhiambo, 42, and Nancy Were, 37 — suffered bruises and were rushed to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
The Fortuner driver, George Nying'iro, 45, escaped unharmed. The driver of the university bus, Jacob Kirwa Kemboi, 59, also survived the accident.
Emergency responders from Kombewa Hospital, Chulaimbo, and St. John’s Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.
At least 16 injured victims — 14 female and 2 male students — were evacuated to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for specialized treatment.
Among those seriously injured are Oscar Okanyele, Fridah Murugi, Stephen Kyalo, and Kevin Mativo, who suffered deep cuts, head injuries, and chest trauma.
The Kisumu County Department of Health has confirmed that an additional 41 victims were treated and discharged from Kombewa Hospital in stable condition.
All vehicles involved were extensively damaged and towed to the police yard for inspection.
Bishop Deya’s body was taken to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation, pending a postmortem.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. Preliminary findings point to lane deviation by the Toyota Voxy and possible mechanical failure on the school bus.
