Millie Odhiambo: Gachagua has changed, he is getting it right lately

Suba North MP and National Assembly Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo now says there are things that Deputy President Rigathi Gichagua is lately doing that are worth observing.

While clarifying that she is not gravitating towards Gachagua, Millie said the DP has lately been getting it right in some aspects, which she believes are earning him political mileage.

"If I were to update my political relationship status with Riggy G, I would label it "Super complicated". I say this so you know what am about to say does not mean I am gravitating towards him. I follow party protocol," Millie clarified.

She then went on to list three things she believes DP Gachagua has lately done, which are positive in the political arena.

One of them is saying no to things he cannot fulfil. On Friday, Gachagua while attending a funeral service in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia county, was asked by an MCA in the area to help with tarmacking of one of the roads.

The DP openly said he cannot promise that because he does not have the resources to do so for now. He said he can only promise what he is sure of.

To this, Millie believes Gachagua is right.

"Many politicians want to be applauded and praised for their actions. We then end up over- promising and not delivering... I rarely make promises in my own constituency but when I do, I have to know that I have resources for it and give timelines," the long serving MP said.

She went on to also laud Gachagua for 'listening to the ground', a phrase popularly used to refer to listening and serving electorates.

Millie said at some point she was in Mt. Kenya and the ground was hostile to Gachagua. But he listened and now he is a darling to the people of the Central Kenya region.

"He made a U-turn and started listening. Right now in Central Kenya, his star is bright. Listening and hearing are two different things. Many leaders hear, few listen. In listening, you wear the other person's shoes. Empathy is a big part of listening. Humility is a big part of listening. Teachable spirit is a big part of listening," Millie added.

She further said that Gachagua has mastered the art of getting the pulse of the people and resonating with them. She particularly pointed out his dance in Nyanza when he accompanied President William Ruto for a work tour.

"Sometimes it's very simple things like that silly Riggy G dance in Nyanza that makes a difference. Luos are a fun loving people. Try that dance elsewhere na utaona cha nini?" she concluded.

Millie, however, made it clear that still her relationship with the DP is 'very complicated', and that 'he still has many weaknesses that he needs to work on'.
