Migori: Widows decry frustration in land inheritance

Gender Based Violence(GBV) activists working for the Kenya Peasant League have raised concern over increasing numbers of widows denied land rights, urging the government to put in place necessary measures to protect the widows.
The activists, led by Mrs.Susan Owiti claim that some of the male chiefs and village elders have been frustrating widows seeking land rights.
Owiti said there is a need to ensure that the land committees at whatever level in the community have good representation for women who can fight for the rights of other women. She said the women have the right to own land, which must be respected at all costs.
Her remarks were echoed by Mrs.Glady Cheserem who said that some of the widows seeking land inheritance have not been able to get justice because of some male chiefs who still believed that women cannot own land.
Some of the victims have indicated that they have undergone a lot of harassment and threats as they try to fight for land ownership either in or without the court.
Meanwhile theleague members have raised concern over rising cases of Gender Based Violence meted against women and therefore call for the intervention of the government.
