Migori launches menstrual hygiene policy
The policy is aimed at addressing challenges in access to sanitary pads and also disposal of the used sanitary pads among other issues.
Migori County Health Director Tom Odhong said they are going to ensure that the policy is implemented fully so that menstrual hygiene issues can be addressed adequately. Odhong said many girls are still missing schools when they are in their menses.
He said the county is going to have a budget for purchasing sanitary pads for the girls in schools.
Rongo University, which is among the partners addressing issues of menstrual hygiene in Migori County will be producing sanitary pads that will be given out to girls.
Maurine Adoyo, a lecturer at Rongo University said the institution is able to produce about 1000 sanitary pads per day.
The county director for education, Emily Obadia said a number of learners are missing school during their menses.
Obadia said the sanitary pads for the schools girls’ project started by the government has met a number of obstacles, hindering access.
