Migori: Concern over increase in marauding hyenas

Residents of Kitere in Suna West, Migori County are in fear over the rising number of marauding hyenas in the region.

They say they have had sleepless nights because of the hyenas which have been raiding homes at night.

Stephen Mugoi, a worker at Lake Basin Development Authority farm in the Lichota area said the hyenas have been preying on their cattle reared at the farm.

Mugoi said they have often been engaging the hyenas in running battles in the middle of the night.

Though the officers from the Kenya Wildlife Services that have lied traps in the region netted one of the hyenas on Saturday night, the residents said there are still more hyenas in the region that should be flushed out.

“The population of the hyenas has been increasing and they have become more destructive,” said Felix Marwa, a resident of Kitere.

The hyenas are not only disturbing the locals but even the dead at Lichota cemetery.

The residents say the animals have been preying on the bodies of the people buried at Lichota cemetery.
