After being grilled for four and a half hours on Wednesday evening at the county DCI offices, Meru Deputy Governor Governor Isaac Mutuma was released on a free bond.
Mutuma had been summoned by DCI officers over Sunday's attack and disruption of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s event dubbed 'Okolea Program' in Igembe South Constituency which was marred by chaos.
Addressing the media outside the DCI offices on Wednesday, Mutuma said that the officers were seeking to obtain details of what transpired during the disruption.
Mutuma, together with his lawyer Marias Maranya, argued that the arrest was a move by Governor Mwangaza to intimidate and threaten them.
Mutuma further criticized his boss for prioritizing the Okolea program at the expense of county development, noting that the program is encouraging poverty and high dependency on the county.
He further stated that Governor Mwangaza has a bitter relationship with leaders and residents in Meru and is the one to be blamed for the county leadership wrangles.
Mutuma is expected to return to the DCI offices on Tuesday, September 26.
Eight officers were injured during the chaos and about four government vehicles were destroyed.
"The incident also left eight NPS Officers seriously injured after being pelted with stones by the attackers. Four vehicles among them, County Government and Police vehicles were also destroyed,” read a statement from the National Police Service (NPS).
Ten suspects have so far been apprehended in relation to the incident.
