Meru assembly set to debate Mwangaza's impeachment amid heavy police deployment

Heavy police deployment at the Meru County Assembly as MCAs set to debate Governor Mwanga's impeachment.

Security has been tightened around the Meru County Assembly premises where MCAs are expected to debate on Governor Kawira Mwangaza's impeachment

The police contingent, led by the North Imenti Sub County Police Commander Aden Ario was deployed in response to reports that goons would invade and torch the premises.

Gunshots were heard during the night as some goons reportedly tried to gain entry to the assembly but they repulsed by the heavy presence of police officers.

It is said that only about 20 out if the 67 MCAs are supporting governor Mwangaza.

Deputy majority leader Ziporah Kinya tabled a notice motion to impeach Mwangaza on three ground, including Gross violation of the constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Mwangaza had filed a petition at a Nairobi high court seeking conservatory orders to stop her impeachment.

Last week, the impeachment motion filed was withdrawn after the mover filed a withdrawal notice.

The motion was then debated and ratified by the members.

"This assembly approves the request by the deputy leader of the majority party, Zipporah Kinya, to withdraw the notice of motion for the removal of the office of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by impeachment whose notice was issued on Wednesday, July 17, 2024,” said the Speaker.

One of the main reasons for the motion's withdrawal was that it was out of time, as such a motion should have been debated and sent to the Senate within 10 days of the notice.

At the same time, withdrawing the motion meant that the ongoing court case lacked a subject matter and would thus be null and void.

A day after withdrawing the notice, deputy majority leader Ziporah Kinya filed a new motion of impeachment.
