Meet Archbishop Anthony Muheria, the engineer turned priest
Archbishop Muheria embraced an unidentified man who nearly disrupted the funeral service while trying to get access to the podium to address the huge gathering at the event attended by top dignitaries including several presidents.
The clergyman de-escalated the situation by calmly moving the man away from the microphone as security agents showed up to contain the situation. Kenyans would then take to social media to commend the renowned Archbishop for the act.
While not much is known about Archbishop Muheria's private life, here are some interesting details about him:
Engineer
Archbishop Muheria is a trained engineer. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Nairobi. After five years of working as an engineer, he resigned and went to the seminary to study priesthood.
"I worked from 1984 up to mid 1989 when I answered my second call that is a story that the papers carried during my ordination. I think it is also good to focus on a person’s calling and this has nothing to do with an individual’s qualifications in terms of degrees," he previously said in an interview with the Standard..
Link to CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge:
Archbishop Anthony Muheria and the Central Bank of Kenya Governor are brothers in a family of eight siblings.
Opus Dei
And just like his brother Dr. Njoroge, Archbishop Muheria is also a member of the Opus Dei organization in the Catholic Church.
Resignation from JSC
Archbishop Muheria was a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) until 2011 when he resigned.
On why he opted out, the clergyman says the decision was purely on grounds of principles.
"The circumstances then could not allow me to serve JSC because the position required time, mind and energy, which I was unable to give due to my role as bishop," he said in the interview.
