Medical fraternity to join anti-Finance Bill match, offer medical care for protesters

As the Occupy Parliament protests enter day two, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced the participation of its members, with a plan to offer medical services to protesters.

KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah has said the medics will handle injuries and emergencies that may arise from the planned demonstrations across Kenyan towns.

The doctors intend to converge in Nairobi and other towns at midday to join other protesters.

"As @kmpdu, we stand in full support of #MedicsForKenya and join the nationwide call to #RejectFinanceBill2024. Our commitment extends to offering medical care to all peaceful demonstrators participating in this crucial movement," Davji wrote on X.

"We will convene in Nairobi CBD and other involved towns at 12 PM to ensure that our voices are heard and that our fellow citizens receive the care they need during these demonstrations."

While vowing to make their presence felt, Davji said that doctors are firmly behind the move to instigate 'meaningful change' while also safeguarding the health of Kenyans.

"We believe in the power of peaceful protest to bring about meaningful change and are dedicated to supporting those who exercise their democratic rights. Let us stand together in solidarity, advocating for a fair and just future for our nation. VIVA!" he added.

Various other doctors on X have backed the message, with many repeatedly sharing tweets of the day's activities, where the medics shall be positioned and who to even call/text in case of an emergency.

Dr. Austin Omondi wrote, "Good morning comrades, here are the WhatsApp coordination groups for Medics in the different regions...We have mobilised over 1000 medical personnel across the country to assist people today."

According to Dr. Omondi, there will be medical teams in Kenyan towns including Nakuru, Laikipia, Nanyuki, Kilifi, Kajiado, Kisii and Meru.

Omondi also called on the police to practise restraint when dealing with medics, reiterating that they will be in the streets for any Kenyan in need of medical care.

"Medics will have a central command centre at Jamia Mosque and other mobile units. You will identify us with our white lab coats and we'll walk in groups. Kindly @NPSOfficial_KE don't harm the medics or any protesters. We're here for all Kenyans who'll need medical aid," he said.

Members of Parliament are on Thursday set to resume debating the 2024 Finance Bill as thousands of irate Kenyans from across the country converge in their respective towns to pile pressure in the hugely-popular Occupy Parliament protests.
