Man who eloped with schoolgirl arrested

Police in Marsabit are holding a 26-year-old man for allegedly eloping and having an affair with an underage girl.

Ramadhan Choma Mohamed was arrested by Administration Police officers attached to Mountain location chief’s office with the help of members of the public at Goro Rukesa area within Marsabit town.

According to area chief Hussein Chariff, the girl’s mother reported the disappearance of her 17-year-old daughter eleven days ago and investigations launched.

Mr. Chariff said Choma was nabbed as he allegedly took the girl to a house near Goro Rukesa dispensary to procure an abortion.

The girl, a Form Three student at a local school said that the suspect had informed her of a woman near the dispensary who could assist in getting rid of the pregnancy.

“The two tried to escape when they saw our team whom they suspected to be police officers but we were able to corner them with the help of members of the public,” added the chief.

According to the girl, their affair started five months ago with the alleged suitor promising to marry her but the man changed tune when she fell pregnant two months ago.
