A man is currently in police custody following the discovery of bhang worth Ksh.1 million, which was found flourishing in a house in Elgon-View estate in Eldoret town on Wednesday.

The suspect, Michael Kibet Kipchumba, surrendered himself to police in Nakuru's central precinct on Friday and confessed that he was the tenant in the house where the outlawed substance was recovered.

He was immediately arraigned in court before Eldoret Resident Magistrate Nancy Barasa following his surrender.

Investigating Officer Kennedy Odhiambo requested Barasa to allow him to detain the suspect for seven days pending investigations.

While making the application,  Odhiambo told the court that he had yet to submit the recovered bhang to a government chemist for analysis.

Police also wanted the seven additional days to establish the ownership of the premises where the bhang was being grown.

According to police, the suspect does not allegedly have a fixed abode and should he be released on bond, tracking him down would be problematic.

In the affidavit police told the court that the suspect had indicated that he was living in Ngong in Kajiado County but he at the same time had another rental house in Eldoret.

Magistrate Barasa however ruled that the suspect be detained for only two days at Nakuru police station.

The case will be mentioned on July 12, 2022.
