Man arrested for selling counterfeit milk powder worth Ksh.1.7M in Mombasa
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal
Investigations (DCI) on Friday arrested a man for selling counterfeit milk
powder worth nearly an estimated Ksh.1.7 million in Mombasa.
Ahmed Salah Mohamed was arrested during a
joint sting operation led by the DCI's Operation Support Unit and officials of the
Kenya Dairy Board and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
During the operation, the officers
confiscated 66 bags of suspected contraband milk powder at Mohamed's store
situated along Biashara Street in Mombasa.
"The following products were recovered;
41 bags of hilwa full cream milk powder each 25 kg and 25 bags of Brookside
full cream milk powder each 25 kg," the DCI said in a statement on X.
"KRA officials estimated a taxable value
of Ksh.1,650,000 on the products, which have since been taken as exhibits at
the KRA Changamwe warehouse."
Upon questioning, Mohamed asserted that he
allegedly obtained the bogus shipment from a partner named Dahir, whose storage
facility is situated in Shimanzi, Mombasa.
"The said Dahir had been arrested during
an earlier operation in Nairobi and investigations are ongoing to trace his
Mombasa warehouse for inspection of the stored products," said the DCI.
