Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has faulted bursary allocations by Members of Parliament, saying they are insufficient to meet the growing education needs of learners across the country.

Speaking during the launch of the 2024/2025 bursary program at Ivumbuni Primary School in Mumbuni North Ward, she welcomed a new agreement allowing governors to take part in bursary distribution, noting that counties can tap into their revenue to support education.

She unveiled a Ksh.120 million bursary fund targeting needy students and said over 92,500 learners have benefited under her administration.

The county has applied a fair and inclusive selection process to ensure deserving cases are prioritised.

School heads were urged to allow learners to remain in school despite delays in disbursement. Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi lauded the program, terming it an investment in the future.

“We sat down with the national government through the Department of Education and the Council of Governors and told them that it is very important for us as county governments to also provide bursaries for our children.

"Yes, Members of Parliament do give bursaries, but that alone is not enough to support the children. And since we also have a role as counties and collect our own-source revenue, it is only right that we channel some of that money back to support our children,” she said.
