Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani and County Commissioner Stephen Orinde jointly led the county’s 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations at Nzovuni High School grounds in Kinango Sub-County, under the national theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.”

Governor Achani highlighted the county’s significant progress in strengthening the fishing industry and expanding the blue economy to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities. Speaking at the event, she announced the procurement of 50 modern fishing boats, which has increased daily fish catches from an average of 2–3 kilograms to approximately 1.5 tonnes.

“I want to commend the National Government for transforming the blue economy sector in Kwale through the construction of Shimoni Port, which is expected to stimulate the local economy,” said Governor Achani.

In a bid to boost marine infrastructure and reduce post-harvest losses, the county has constructed and upgraded nine fish landing sites across Tsunza, Mwaepe, Waa, Tiwi, and Vanga. These facilities are now equipped with cold storage units and modern fish-handling equipment. The county has also provided training to over 1,200 women in sustainable fishing practices and value addition.

One of the key projects underway is the construction of a comprehensive fish landing site in Mwaepe, Kinondo Ward, Msambweni Sub-County. The site will include a fish processing plant, cold storage, a gear mending shed, a boatyard, and retail stalls—aimed at improving fish marketing, ensuring safer working conditions for artisanal fishermen, and increasing incomes.

Kwale County is home to about 13 percent of Kenya’s total mangrove forest cover. Areas such as Munje, Mwache, and Funzi Island are vital ecological zones that support biodiversity, enhance climate change resilience, and sustain local livelihoods.

County Commissioner Stephen Orinde and Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo echoed Governor Achani’s message, urging residents to embrace and support ongoing government initiatives designed to spur economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Kinango Member of Parliament Gonzi Rai and Kwale Woman Representative Fatuma Masito also addressed attendees, underscoring the historical significance of Madaraka Day and encouraging citizens to honor the legacy of freedom fighters by actively participating in national development.

Other leaders present included CEC members, Chief Officers, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), and senior county officials.
