A community health nurse from Nyangena Hospital in Kisii County is among three people in police custody, following a botched murder plot at Bosongo Hospital in Kitutu Central.

According to a police report, a medical intern was offered a Ksh.10,000 bribe by persons sent by the nurse, with the instruction to inject a male patient with an unidentified dangerous drug.

At the male wards of Bosongo Hospital, 82-year-old Jacob Moseti shuffles through his Bible, occasionally deeply reflecting from his hospital bed.

Despite the pain of his frail health, he says he is lucky to be alive. On Tuesday, two men came to the general ward. The two seemed unsure of whom they wanted to see.

Unknown to him at the time, the two young men had an insulin syringe filled with a yet-to-be-identified drug.

The two suspects approached a medical intern at Bosongo Hospital, promising him a Ksh.10,000 bribe if he delivered a video of him injecting 82-year-old Moseti with the syringe. His conscience weighing on him, the intern had to think on his feet.

"Nikawauliza sasa mtajuaje nimemdunga hii dawa, si muende? Na mmoja nikamwambia sasa juu hamtaki kuenda, wacha basi nichukue simu niende kurecord alafu ndio nirudi mnipee hio pesa," the intern said.

"They wanted to inject the medication by themselves that time in the morning, but due to hospital staff always wearing uniforms... they had to find someone else because the patient could have asked who they were," Monica Ngeresa, Nursing In Charge, Bosongo Hospital, noted.

The two have since been apprehended. While assisting police with investigations, they named a 25-year-old community nurse who they allege gave them the syringe.

Police said Fiona Mogere has also been arrested and is currently under suicide watch at Nyanchwa Police Station after she was found in possession of a pesticide, which police believe she had planned to ingest.

Moseti now says the plot to end his life could have been instigated by a long-standing family dispute, where some of his relatives accused him of witchcraft.

The suspects will remain in custody for 14 days as police seek to unravel the motive behind the bizarre plan. Meanwhile, Mzee Moseti clutches his Bible, thankful to have escaped the jab of death.
